Acupuncture for Insomnia

Insomnia is one of the most common complaints in an acupuncture clinic, and one of the easiest to treat. Insomnia effects a great many of us, especially in New York City. (I’m trying very hard not to use the old cliché about this city). Because of our sleeplessness we are increasingly turning to drugs such as Ambien to mask the problem. But drugging ourselves to sleep each evening is not what I consider healthy.

What is Insomnia in Chinese Medicine?

Insomnia causes a cycle of disharmony. Two things usually happen when we don’t get enough sleep. Our bodies produce more of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline which cause us to be more edgy, and we tend to drink more coffee or tea, which are notorious contributing factors in insomnia.

The cycle is broken when you start to sleep better naturally after the acupuncture sessions, the stress hormones are reduced, caffeine is temporarily removed, aspects of your routine and diet are changed, and you take herbal medicine which is custom designed specifically for your body. After a course of a few treatments you will no longer need anything to help you fall asleep.

Acupuncture Can Help

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine provide a safe alternative which is an effective and long lasting treatment. Acupuncture does not only reduce stress hormones and provide a profound calm, but it brings homeostasis (balance) to the body’s nervous system.
